Members of Community Board 12-Manhattan (CB12M) visited The Shabazz Center, located on 165th Street and Broadway, to learn about the historic events that took place on that site.

The Shabazz Center commemorates Malcolm X, who was assassinated in the building when preparing to deliver a speech. The space provides several exhibitions describing his life, his work, and his impact in the community and throughout the world.

The CB12M members were welcomed by Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz, one of Malcolm X’s daughters, who currently serves as the Executive Director of The Shabazz Center. Dr. Shabazz’s team conducted the tour and shared their perspective of lasting impact of Malcolm X’s legacy.

“While visiting The Shabazz Center, I learned about how an important part of the civil rights movement took place right in our neighborhood,” said Eitan Szteinbaum, a member of CB12M. “As a [CB12M] member, experiences like these help me more deeply understand the rich history of our community.”

CB12M’s Uptown Tours series was designed to expose the Board’s members to the plethora of important sites throughout Washington Heights and Inwood. The Shabazz Center was the first stop in 2026 so far, and the Board’s leadership is currently planning where to visit next.
