Plans for St. Vincent Site

As announced on March 10, 2011 and subject to approval by the Federal Bankruptcy Court and various City and State approvals, St. Vincent Hospital is contributing the landmark O’Toole Building on the West Side of 7th Avenue between 12thand 13th Streets to North Shore-LIJ Health System, which plans to invest $110 million to renovate and develop the building to create the “North Shore-LIJ Center for Comprehensive Care,” which North Shore-LIJ says will be a free-standing, 160,000 square foot 24-hour emergency department. The Rudin family is providing $10 million to partially offset North Shore-LIJ’s costs and is acquiring the eastern portion of the St. Vincent’s campus for development. There are other aspects to this project, including the development of public open space on the triangle at the corner of Seventh Avenue South and Greenwich Avenue and the promise of a new, locally zoned elementary school to be located at the present New York Foundling Hospital site on Sixth Ave. and 17 St.

There will be an opportunity for public comment on these proposals in the future through Community Board 2. In the meantime, below is some relevant background information
