SUMMER STREETS RETURNS

The Department of Transportation will again close 22 miles of roadway to vehicular traffic on Saturdays, August 1^st, 8^th and 15^th. The route in CB2M’s District runs along Lafayette Street/4^th Avenue from Canal Street to 14^th Street. For more information, please click here.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AT THE PRECINCTS

All four Precincts in our District, in conjunction with their respective Precinct Community Councils, will take part in National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4th, an opportunity to meet the officers who serve our Community, connect with neighbors, and enjoy music, food, family-friendly activities, community organizations, giveaways, and more. The details for each Precinct in our area are:

1^st Precinct: On Pier 16 at the South Street Seaport between Fulton and John Streets, from 6 to 8 pm.
5^th Precinct: On Division Street between Market Street and the Bowery, from 3 to 8 pm
6^th Precinct: On Charles Street between Hudson and Bleecker Streets, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm
9^th Precinct: At 321 East 5^th Street between 1^st and 2^nd Avenues, from 4 to 7 pm.

FREE FRIDAY NIGHTS AT THE WHITNEY

The Whitney Museum offers free admission from 5–10 pm on Fridays, with special programming throughout the Museum. BID EXPANSION OPEN HOUSE

The Union Square Partnership is proposing to expand its footprint, and is hosting a BID Expansion Open House in collaboration with the Offices of Council Members Harvey Epstein and Carl Wilson. The open house will take place on Tuesday, August 11 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at The Stand NYC (116 E 16th Street) and we are encouraging residents in the potential expansion area to stop by this session to learn more about what we are exploring, ask questions, and speak with members of our team. FREE LEGAL SERVICES FOR START-UP BUSINESSES

The Startup NYC project of Manhattan Legal Services provides free legal services to low-income entrepreneurs, small business owners, freelance workers and nonprofit organization in New York City.

CITYWIDE TRASH CONTAINERIZATION PROGRAM

The Department of Sanitation has published a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) relating to the proposed Citywide Containerization Program. To access the DEIS on the DSNY website, please click here. The DEIS includes information on how to access the online public hearing on July 28, 2026 at 5 pm.

REPEAL OF LOCAL LAW 75

From the Department of Buildings: “On June 30, 2026, the Council passed Intro 910-A, repealing certain provisions of Local Law 75 of 2009, including the requirement that security grilles installed on structures classified as Occupancy Groups B or M provide at least 70% visibility of the area covered by the grille. The provisions of Intro 910-A are effective immediately.

As a result, the 70% visibility requirement under Local Law 75 of 2009, as well as the July 1, 2026, compliance deadline, no longer apply.” This applies to both new security grille installations as well as existing security grilles.

COMMISSION ON GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY

The Charter Revision Commission on Government Efficiency has now adopted a final report and proposed Charter amendments that will appear on the ballot in November. For links to the final report, propose Charter amendments, proposed ballot questions and more, please click here.

FREE SUMMER MEALS

NYC Public Schools are again providing free summer meals for everyone aged 18 years and under through September 4^th. The meals are available at various schools, pools, parks and playgrounds during the week, and even include food trucks at certain locations on weekends. FAMILIES ENCOURAGED TO CLAIM YOUR $120 FOOD BENEFIT

Families with children are encouraged to take advantage of the summer food benefit program for New York families. The program aims to help families feed their children when school is on break. A quarter of the money last summer went unspent, and instead of going to families in need, that money went back to the federal government. As food insecurity rises, the state is making a push to ensure that eligible families get their $120 per child in Summer EBT benefits.

FRESH PRODUCE FROM FARM TO SENIOR

OPEN STREETS – FARMERS MARKET EVENT

As part of the Noho Open Streets Alliance initiative, there will be a farmers market from 11am-5pm on Saturday, July 25th, with the goal of bringing the public onto Bond Street between Bowery and Lafayette Street.

The market includes 20 organic farming growers, small CPG and food businesses, and nonprofits to share their produce, prepared foods, crafts and education that day. They hail from NYC, the Bronx, Queens and the Hudson Valley, NY and will each be designated a 10×10 tent. There will also be performances by singer-songwriter Raphaelle as well as DJs from 11-3pm and 4-5pm. There is no stage being built, or elaborate set-up; our goal is to mimic an actual farmers market; the sound will not be loud, just ambient.

SAFE AT HOME CLASSES

The final NYC Health + Hospitals Safe@Home class for this summer is a 2hr virtual class for 4^th-6^th graders to learn how to be safe when staying home alone. NYPL – READING AMERICA

Reading America: 250 Years, 250 Books. To commemorate 250 years since the founding of the United States, The New York Public Library has compiled a list of 250 notable books for all ages that reflect on and illuminate the American experience from a variety of perspectives. SURVEY ON PUBLIC E-BIKE CHARGING STATIONS

The NYC DOT launched a public portal to solicit feedback for our Public E-Bike Charging (PEC) program. DoT invites your feedback through July 31^st. This initiative follows a six-month e-bike battery-charging pilot intended to ensure that battery-swapping cabinets are safe, widely used, and convenient for delivery workers. Colon Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Webinar

The NYC Health Department is offering a webinar on colon cancer prevention and early detection on August 10, 2026 from 10 to 11 am. The session will focus on colon cancer prevention, risk factors, and screening. ARTISTS FOR HUMANITY NYC

Artists for Humanity connects young people with real, paid creative work. Youth work alongside professional mentors on real client projects, developing creative solutions and presenting their work directly to clients. Along the way, they build valuable skills in design, communication, collaboration, time management, and professional development. Young people ages 14–18 are eligible. There are currently openings in both the Digital Media and Painting studios. No prior experience is required, just curiosity, creativity, and commitment. ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE

The NYC Health Department launched a new public awareness campaign encouraging New Yorkers to keep themselves and their family healthy by signing up for low- to no-cost health insurance through the department’s free health insurance enrollment services. Through the campaign, the department seeks to expand health insurance coverage among underserved communities, making affordable health services more accessible to those who need them most. NYPL SUMMER ENGLISH AND LITERACY CLASSES

Registration for New York Public Library’s free summer English and Literacy classes has begun. All classes are free for adult learners who are 18 and older and who live, work or study in New York and are not enrolled in high school. NYPL offers beginner to advanced English and advanced English for Work classes throughout Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island, as well as intermediate to advanced online English classes. There is also limited space in Literacy Classes (not tutoring) for new readers and writers.

Switch replacement work will require weekend and late night weekday service changes on the 1/2/3 lines and the 4 line in our District in July and August. The upcoming subway service interruptions include:

1 trains will operate between Van Cortlandt Park-242 St and 34 St-Penn Station
2 trains will operate between Eastchester-Dyre Av and 34 St-Penn Station
3 service will be suspended
4 trains will extend to serve New Lots Av starting at approximately 9:15 PM
5 trains will operate between Wakefield-241 St and Flatbush Av
In Manhattan, free S3728 shuttle buses will operate between 148 St and 135 St replacing 2 and 3 service.

Weekends of July 25-27, August 1-3, August 8-10, August 15-17, and August 22-24 starting from 12AM Saturday – 5AM Monday:

Effective as of now, passengers on the M20 bus between 3 pm and 7 pm weekdays may exit at the former Varick Street/Clarkson Street stop or the former Varick Street/Watts Street stop if the driver considers those locations to be safe.

The NYC Department of Design & Construction is at work on reconstruction of ADA pedestrian ramps, installation of granite curbs, upgraded sidewalks, restored cobblestone areas, and improvements in street lighting at the following locations. Holland Tunnel lane closures for coming week:

From Sunday, July 26th, through Thursday, July 30th, from 11:00 pm each night to 5:00 am the following morning, one eastbound lane will be closed.
From Sunday, July 26th, through Thursday, July 30th, from 11:30 pm each night to 5:30 am the following morning, one westbound lane will be closed.

Also with respect to the Holland Tunnel, please note that beginning Monday, July 27^th, Exit 3 in Manhattan (just south of Canal Street) will be closed for pavement repair. Brooklyn bound traffic will be directed to use Exit 4. Completion is expected the first week of September.

Gateway Tunnel Development – tunnel construction operations will require intermittent changes to traffic patterns on West 30^th Street and 12^th Avenue – as many as 5 to 10 times per day, weekdays and weekends through March 2027. For more inquiries about these route changes, please click here.

Also with respect to the Gateway Tunnel Project – there will be a continuous concrete pour near 11^th Avenue and West 30^th Street for 18 hours on July 24 to July 25 and again on July 31 to August 1. The pouring may require traffic re-routing.

Re-Routing of the Bike Path / Greenway Along the Hudson – The bike lanes and pedestrian paths along the Hudson River have been re-routed for approximately 6 months to accommodate work for the Manhattan Tunnel Project. For more information, please click here.
