Warming Centers Open

From the NYC Office of Emergency Management:

As we continue to experience very cold temperatures, we want to remind everyone that warming centers are open. For residents needing relief from the cold, locations and times may be found herehttps://on.nyc.gov/warmingcenters.

Department of Social Services (DSS) outreach teams are intensifying their efforts to reach and support the most vulnerable New Yorkers. No one who is experiencing homelessness and seeking shelter will be denied. If you see an individual experiencing homelessness out in the cold, please call 311 and a first responder will be dispatched to offer assistance.

These extreme cold temperatures affect our infrastructure and can lead to power outages.

Cold Weather Outage Tips

  • If you lose power and/or heat, insulate your home as much as possible. Hang blankets over windows and doorways and find a well-insulated room for living while power is out.
  • Dress warmly. Wear hats, scarves, gloves and layered clothing.
  • Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns for light. Do not use candles.
  • Never heat your home with a gas stove or oven.
  • Do not use any gas-powered appliance, such as a generator, indoors.
  • Open your faucets to a steady drip so pipes do not freeze.
  • Keep your phones and laptops charged.
