The Port Authority is performing work related to the Holland Tunnel Sandy Repairs and Resiliency Improvements Project at the intersection of Canal Street and Hudson Street beginning on Monday, January 11th. Their contractor has secured the necessary permits and will excavate a section of the right lane from Hudson Street to Canal Street (Image below) to dig test pits in support of the tunnel portal flood barrier installation. The test pits require a closure of this section of the lane for approximately 10 days.
A couple of key points:
- There will be a detour for the daytime hours (7:00AM-3:00PM) for traffic turning right on Canal Street from Hudson Street.
- Pedestrians will be directed to the North Side of Canal Street.
- A PANYNJ Traffic Engineering analysis concluded no significant traffic concerns associated with this work.
- They do not anticipate any issues related to excessive noise from this work.
