Community Boards in New York City serve as advisory bodies that represent the interests of their neighborhoods\, and this committee focuses on fostering equitable access to resources and opportunities for children\, families\, and lifelong learners. \n  \n\nRole and Responsibilities of the Education\, Youth\, and Libraries Committee\n1. Education Advocacy and Oversight\n\nCollaborating with local schools (public\, charter\, and private) to address community concerns about education quality\, equity\, and accessibility.\nAdvocating for adequate funding\, resources\, and facilities for local schools.\nEngaging with the Department of Education (DOE)\, principals\, and parent-teacher associations (PTAs) to resolve issues affecting students and staff.\n\n2. Youth Development\n\nSupporting programs and initiatives that provide mentorship\, after-school activities\, and job training for youth.\nPartnering with community-based organizations to create opportunities for leadership development and skill-building.\nAddressing concerns related to youth safety\, mental health\, and access to recreational spaces.\n\n3. Libraries and Lifelong Learning\n\nAdvocating for funding and resources to maintain and expand library services.\nCollaborating with the New York Public Library (NYPL) to develop programs that support literacy\, digital inclusion\, and cultural enrichment.\nSupporting libraries as vital community hubs for education and public engagement.\n\n4. Policy Recommendations\n\nProviding feedback on city policies affecting education\, youth\, and libraries\, including budget allocations\, school rezonings\, and curriculum changes.\nAddressing issues such as overcrowding in schools\, teacher retention\, and the digital divide.\n\n5. Community Engagement\n\nHosting public meetings and forums to discuss issues affecting students\, families\, and educators.\nFacilitating communication between residents and relevant city agencies\, such as the DOE\, the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD)\, and the NYPL.\nPromoting community events and resources related to education\, youth programs\, and library activities.\n\n\nMeetings\nThe committee typically meets monthly and encourages participation from residents\, educators\, students\, and advocates. Meetings often include presentations from local schools\, youth organizations\, and library representatives\, as well as updates on citywide policies impacting these areas. \n\nImpact\nThe Education\, Youth\, and Libraries Committee ensures that the community’s voice is heard on matters that directly affect education and youth opportunities.
